Voicing your opinion

Voicing your opinion

There are several ways to contact your government representatives about bills:

Federal Level (U.S. Congress):

  • Find your representatives at congress.gov or house.gov and senate.gov
  • Call their Washington D.C. offices or local district offices
  • Send emails through their official websites
  • Mail physical letters to their offices
  • Use the Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121

State Level:

  • Visit your state legislature’s website to find your state representatives and senators
  • Most states have online contact forms, phone numbers, and email addresses listed
  • Many state legislatures have hotlines for constituent services

Local Level:

  • Contact your city council members, county commissioners, or local representatives through your municipal website
  • Attend public comment periods at local government meetings

Tips for effective contact:

  • Be specific about which bill you’re referencing (use the bill number if possible)
  • Clearly state your position and reasoning
  • Keep your message concise and respectful
  • Include your name and address to show you’re a constituent
  • Phone calls and personalized letters tend to have more impact than form emails
